The Art of Dr. Seuss

We have Every SECRET ART Piece OF DR. SEUSS in stock and ready to ship!

The wildly imaginative creations included in the Secret Art Collection show a previously unseen dimension of Theodor Seuss Geisel's art. These sophisticated and whimsical paintings created for his own pleasure and never before shown to the public will enchant and amaze you. These fantastical images have the inimitable style of Geisel's alter ego Dr. Seuss, frequently depicting outlandish creatures in otherworldly settings.

RACING NORTH TO GET COOL - AVAILABLE FOR ORDER NOW
Ted Geisel dedicated McElligot’s Pool to his father, T.R. Geisel of Springfield, Mass., whom he pronounced “the world’s greatest authority on Blackfish, Fiddler Crabs and Deegel Trout. This book of whimsical rhymes is about Marco, a bold boy who withstands the taunts of a nay-saying farmer who’s convinced there are no fish to be caught in McElligott’s Pool.

In typical Seussian fashion, when confronted with the limitations of a situation, Geisel’s character, Marco, resorts to his powerful imagination to create an impressive reality of Seussian fish.

A 1947 “Caldecott Honor” book, McElligott’s Pool clearly stands out among Geisel’s artistic accomplishments and is one of just two Seuss books developed from vibrantly colored paintings, versus his traditional pen and ink illustrations.

Ted Geisel’s original paintings from this book remain out of the public eye and, to this day, are under the archival care of the Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego. However this past April, guests attending the “Seuss San Diego” event were treated to a rare private viewing and were able to witness firsthand the luminous, compelling and extraordinary qualities of these award-winning paintings.

Now for the first time, we proudly present Racing North to Get Cool, a new hand-pulled serigraph on canvas from the McElligot’s Pool collection.

Anthony Drexel Goldfarb - NOW AVAILABLE AT ART on 5TH

While Anthony Drexel Goldfarb (circa 1934) has seen his name recycled by his creator as “Peeping Drexel” in Dr. Seuss’s 1939 The Seven Lady Godivas, its origin can’t be pinpointed to a specific person or influence. Suffice it to say, the name has all the flair of a Seussian invention — a marvelous one-of-a-kind creation, born into a small, ingenious circle of never-before-seen beasts of absurdity.

Anthony Drexel Goldfarb is presented as a wall-mounted, hand-painted, cast resin sculpture with leather ears, in a limited edition of 850. Collectors seeking to complete their Secret Art Taxidermy Series will take great joy in the charm and personality of this work. We look forward to speaking with you about this exceptional collecting opportunity.

Wisdom of the Orient Cat

For Ted Geisel, a refined feline became his favorite muse, with no fewer than twenty-two cats throughout The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss book, plus the hundred or so cats in the painting A Plethora of Cats. Ultimately, the Cat became the icon for children’s literacy and is literally used as the logo on books from Random House’s Beginner Book Series.

Just as collectors respond to Monet’s “haystacks,” artworks containing Seuss’s signature cats are consistently collected with unbridled passion. In fact, works such as A Plethora of Cats, Joseph Katz and His Coat of Many Colors, Alley Cat for a Very Long Alley, Cat from the Wrong Side of the Tracks and Indistinct Cat with Cigar, have become the most sought-after works in the collection.

In Wisdom of the Orient Cat, Ted Geisel blends the ancient philosophical and spiritual elements of the Orient into a commanding, yet serene artwork. The term “Wisdom of the Orient” refers to a synthesis of beliefs and practices which includes the inspired contemplations of ancient Chinese proverbs. Seuss’s artistic intelligence provides poise and presence for these concepts, while avoiding the cartoonish pitfalls of merging the serious with the surreal, traps in which lesser artists are often found.
Without a doubt, this has been the single most requested artwork from the Seuss collection over the past ten years.
