ART On 5th Gallery In Austin BY: Mikala Wright
I have to admit that ART on 5th Gallery is one of my favorite Austin art galleries. Especially since they feature artwork by a much loved childhood famed artist and author, Dr. Seuss. When I was a little girl, I read “Green Eggs and Ham” and “The Cat in the Hat” on a weekly basis. And during the holidays, “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” is actually still an annual read.
So the first time I went to the gallery, I was super stoked to see Dr. Seuss’ whimsical artwork on display for viewing entertainment and to take me back to my childhood imagination. In fact, Art on 5th has the largest collection of the art of Dr. Seuss in the country! I am a returning viewer of the gallery and have learned that Dr. Seuss was an illustrator by day, surrealist by night. The surrealist art movement is so intriguing and I remember thoroughly enjoying learning about it in college because of its creativity and uniqueness.
ART on 5th recently moved their location to 3005 South Lamar, Suite C110B. As Austin’s largest contemporary art gallery with over 6,000 square feet in exhibition space, ART on 5th prides itself in its eclectic collection of artists in its museum-like setting. Also, it is the only commercial gallery ever voted multiple times as “Best in Austin.” Austinites and tourists all continue to adore and appreciate the colorful and diverse collection of local, Texas, national and international artists. The gallery owner, Joe Sigel, opened the gallery in 1998 after realizing the necessity of a contemporary gallery in Austin by first introducing a collection of works by Picasso, Andy Warhol and others.
Along with its ongoing exhibits of framed artwork, ART on 5th welcomes touring exhibitions from all over. In addition to an incredible selection of fine art, ART on 5th is also the leading custom framer of choice in town.
ART on 5th Gallery donates gift certificates to live auctions and various local fundraisers.
